History Of Gorey
Gorey is the principal town of North Wexford,
with a population of approx. 4,000. It is a well established
town on the main route from Dublin to Wexford.
The main street has many old fashioned shop fronts, which
add to the towns historical image (Browne's Pub, Hughie Doyle's
Myles Doyle's and Quinn's Lounge). As gorey has been the the
scene to many battles during the 1798 rising, a monument is
situated at the top of the town, and faces down the main street.
The historic Market House, is a victorian style building,
which the towns commissioners use as their headquarters, it
is also home to the unique chiming clock.
The Court House built in 1819
was burned down in 1922 but was rebuilt shortly afterwards.
The new building also houses the town's library. Gorey is
home to 3 churches, Christ Church which was built in1861,
the methodist Church which was built 1834 and is situated
in the towns market square; (which is a designated casual
trading area) and St. Michael's Church which is situated off
the bottom of the main street.
